MICROSOFT GIVING- It is always a privilege to join forces with Microsoft. I was honored once again to join Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President, Aanchal Gupta, for a fireside chat during National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM). The event was part of Microsoft’s Employee Giving and Corporate Giving Program, with proceeds benefiting the Asia Society Northern California Center. Microsoft employees are deeply committed to dedicating their time, resources, and expertise to tackle the pressing challenges of our world. In 2023, Microsoft employees around the world rallied together to provide $250 million (inclusive of company match) to over 35,000 nonprofits. Nearly 50,000 Microsoft employees volunteered more than 1 million hours. This remarkable commitment to service exemplifies how deeply ingrained a sense of social responsibility is within this organization.
Our discussion addressed key issues at the intersection of AI, cybersecurity, and law, including AI’s impact on traditional legal frameworks, its role in crime, the dangers of deepfakes, evolving regulations, agency priorities, ethical risks, privacy concerns, and multijurisdictional conflicts. These are meaningful conversations that drive both awareness and positive impact, demonstrating the powerful synergy between law, technology, and philanthropy in shaping a more just and secure future!
SESSION DETAILS
1. "AI Unchecked: Ethical Dilemmas and Legal Challenges from the Boardroom to the Courtroom"
• Speakers: Adriana Sanford, Hon. Noel H. Hillman (Retired)
As the use of AI continues to expand in the business and legal world, it brings with it a host of ethical and legal dilemmas. From the boardroom to the courtroom, the impact of AI is raising important questions about its use and implications. Session topics include, among others, the admissibility of AI-generated evidence in court, ethical considerations of using AI in business decision-making, SEC and DOJ enforcement priorities centering on AI, and potential biases and discrimination from AI algorithms.
2. "Navigating Cybersecurity Disclosures Amidst SEC Regulations"
• Speakers: Adriana Sanford, Karen Worstell.
As the legal landscape adapts to the complexities of digital innovations, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has mandated that public companies disclose any cybersecurity incidents in their 8-K filings. This regulation has heightened what is now being termed SEC Anxiety Disorder (SAD) among executives, who find themselves grappling with intricate disclosure demands. This session simplifies the process of preparing for an 8-K incident disclosure and offers a comprehensive roadmap for not just meeting, but exceeding SEC expectations, focusing on the intricacies of materiality determination and its significant downstream impacts. Through analysis of recent 8-K filings, participants will learn about prevailing trends, common pitfalls, and best practices.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC CRISIS
As the global pandemic began to evolve, Sanford founded and chaired The University of Oklahoma Global Risks & Threats Series (GRTS) Leadership Forum in May 2020. The Global Risks & Threats Series was a four-part COVID-19 series (June, July, August, September) featuring leaders from the intelligence, finance, law enforcement, corporate, and cyber sectors. "The first Global Risks & Threats event centered largely on the ramifications of what Sanford calls 'the great lockdown.' Vast numbers of people suddenly started working remotely, yet many companies did not have the tools or policies for their employees to safely access data from home. Cyber criminals were at the ready to take advantage of lapses in security."
